Kanpur known as Cawnpore before 1948, is one of the most populous cities in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is located on the banks of the Ganga and is an important industrial center. It has an area of over 1000 sq km and had a population of around 2.7 million in the 1991 census.
